May 18-22, 2012

Haiko Cornelissen Architecten will present the picNYC table at WantedDesign 2012. With a grass table top, picNYC brings the rural picnic into the urban residence. Urban farming is a fast growing phenomenon where the typically rural practice of agriculture is brought into the city. The picNYC table goes one step further and brings the rural experience of picnicking not just in the city, but into the apartment. The folded lightweight aluminum table top and legs form a stiff framework for the grass, soil and stones (needed for drainage).

Architect’s Newspaper reviews Iwan Baan’s book Brasilia-Chandigarh: Living with Modernity

June 22nd, 2011 by

Date: June 22, 2011

Source: Architect’s Newspaper

News item: Review>Time Lapse – Iwan Baan, Brasilia-Chandigarh: Living with Modernity

Intro: Ansel Adams once wrote, “A true photograph need not be explained, nor can it be contained in words.” This is what I think as I look at the work of Dutch photographer Iwan Baan. The first thing to remember is that Iwan Baan is not an “architectural” photographer. He is a photographer who happens to shoot buildings. In 2010, he was awarded the inaugural Julius Shulman Institute Photography Award. But do not let this mislead you. What is most noticeable about his new book Brasilia-Chandigarh: Living with Modernity is the living part. The architecture is eye-catching, and how could it not be since we are dealing with Oscar Niemeyer and Le Corbusier. But what pops in the photographs are the people interacting with these revolutionary and idealized modernist cities. The buildings are sometimes in shadow, sometimes obscured by blurs of people running through monsoon rains, water streaming over the lens. (click link to read more)

March 19 – April 16, 2011
Opening Reception: Saturday, March 19, 6-8 PM

ACME presents a solo exhibition by Iwan Baan with work from his Chandigarh and Brasilia series.

About Iwan Baan
Iwan Baan is an architecture and documentary photographer. He has worked with numerous internationally recognized architects, including Rem Koolhaas – OMA, Herzog & deMeuron, Zaha Hadid, Toyo Ito, Steven Holl, and Thom Mayne – Morphosis. Mr. Baan’s pictures evolve around architecture and its effect on the context, using the built environment as a backdrop for intimate and timeless human stories that unfold in the foreground. This exhibition presents selected photographs from two different mid-twentieth century utopian cities. One is Brasilia in central Brazil, and the other is Chandigarh in northern India. The photographs in the exhibition are included in a recent publication titled “Brasilia – Chandigarh: Living with Modernity” by Lars Müller Publishers.
